In a powerful testament to faith and community growth, the Catholic Church in Katakwi Town Council witnessed a historic moment as the Bishop of Soroti Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr  Joseph Eciru Oliach presided over a major confirmation ceremony at St. Stephen Catholic Church over the weekend.

The solemn yet joyful celebration saw 686 Christians receive the Sacrament of Confirmation, sealing them with the gifts of the Holy Spirit and marking a significant milestone in their spiritual journey.

The event drew large crowds of families, parishioners, and church leaders, reflecting the strong bonds of faith and community within the parish.

The church compound was filled with reverence and celebration as the confirmands—both youth and adults—stood before the bishop dressed in white robes, symbolizing purity, renewal, and new life in the Spirit. Hymns, prayer, and quiet reflection set a deeply spiritual tone for the occasion.

In his homily, Bishop Eciru emphasized that confirmation is not merely a ritual but a call to transformation and responsibility.

“Today, you are not simply completing a ceremony,” the bishop told the confirmands. “You are being strengthened by the Holy Spirit to become active witnesses of Christ’s love in your families, communities, and the world. This sacrament is your personal Pentecost.”

The large number of candidates underscored the continued growth of the Catholic faith in Katakwi District and the effectiveness of parish catechetical programs. Parish Priest Rev. Fr. John Okiria described the day as the culmination of months of dedication and spiritual formation.

“This celebration is the fruit of long preparation, study, and prayer,” Fr. Okiria said. “These 686 Christians have freely and consciously chosen to deepen their commitment to God and the Church. It is a day of great hope for our parish.”

The Significance of Confirmation
Beyond the local celebration, the event highlighted the universal importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church.

As one of the three Sacraments of Initiation—alongside Baptism and the Eucharist—Confirmation fully incorporates believers into the life and mission of the Church, strengthening them to live out their faith publicly and courageously.

For the newly confirmed Christians of Katakwi, the day marks a lifelong spiritual turning point.

They are now called to live as mature witnesses of the Gospel, bringing Christian values into their homes, workplaces, schools, and the wider society.

Their confirmation not only strengthens their individual faith but also enriches the entire St. Stephen’s community with renewed energy, commitment, and hope.

In a region—and a world—often marked by uncertainty, the public affirmation of faith by 686 individuals stands as a powerful sign of continuity and hope.

More than a ceremony, the Confirmation at St. Stephen Catholic Church represents an investment in the spiritual future of Katakwi and a clear declaration that the Catholic faith is alive, growing, and being faithfully passed on to a new generation of steadfast witnesses.
