Hundreds of people on Saturday gathered at Nugabania Cell in Busaba Town Council to witness a rare and emotional ceremony in which children rewarded their mother for remaining single for 30 years after the death of their father.

The function was held at the home of the late Lt. Stanley Namwayu, a traditional chief who served in the ancient administrations of Bukedi and the then greater Tororo District. Namwayu passed away in 1997, leaving behind a widow and children.

In appreciation of their mother’s sacrifice and resilience, the children constructed a permanent house for her, fully furnished and equipped with other household property.

Speaking during the ceremony, Stephen Higenyi, the heir of the late Namwayu, said the gesture was a token of gratitude for their mother’s unwavering commitment to raising and educating them.

He noted that she struggled to educate the children and pay bride price without support, yet remained steadfast.

Higenyi added that the family was proud of their mother for choosing to live a disciplined life, explaining that despite losing her husband at the age of 41, she refrained from publicly befriending any man and instead focused on raising her children.

Wilberforce Mwima, the Minister of Information in the Bunyole Cultural Institution and an in-law to the family, described the ceremony as historic, saying it should serve as a challenge and inspiration to other children to appreciate their parents.

The beneficiary, Aida Namulemu Namwayu, thanked her children for the reward and advised fellow single parents, especially widows, to remain patient and tolerant in the face of challenges.

She said the loss of a husband should not be seen as the end of life, urging widows to be innovative, hardworking, and committed to the upbringing of their children.
