Tororo District is witnessing an unprecedented surge in applications for national IDs, overwhelming the local offices of the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA). Residents from all 42 administrative units have been arriving in large numbers to register for new IDs, renew expired ones, or collect printed cards, resulting in long queues and extended waiting times.

District Registration Officer Micah Mutomi said the surge reflects growing public awareness of the importance of national IDs in accessing essential services. He noted that offices operate on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to the elderly.

Residents cited the increasing requirement of IDs for employment, travel documentation, and SIM card registration as key drivers of the rush. One applicant reported being denied a visa and passport processing abroad due to the absence of a national ID, while another highlighted that SIM card registration now requires presenting an ID.

Despite the high demand, NIRA officials reported that hundreds of IDs printed last year remain uncollected. Mutomi urged residents to pick up their cards, which are issued free of charge, and warned against fraud, cautioning the public to avoid paying third parties for services that are officially free.

The surge at Tororo reflects a wider trend of heightened demand for national IDs across the country as citizens seek to comply with new administrative and regulatory requirements.
