Mercy Kanyesigye, the newly elected National Female Youth Member of Parliament, has announced plans to establish a Special Youth Desk aimed at enhancing young Ugandans’ access to government programs and essential services.

Speaking on Friday, Kanyesigye explained that the initiative is designed to bridge the gap between youth leaders, government agencies, and young citizens, particularly those facing challenges in accessing vital documents and government interventions.

“After swearing in, I will set up a special desk to assist youth who are finding it difficult to access government programs such as the Parish Development Model, Emyooga, skilling initiatives, and those who need passports, National IDs, and other essential documents,” Kanyesigye said.

The desk will feature a designated officer who will coordinate with relevant government institutions to simplify the process of obtaining key identification documents, which are essential for participation in national programs.

Kanyesigye pointed out that many young people, particularly those who registered for National IDs while in school, are still waiting to receive their identification — a situation she described as “a growing concern and a paradox.”

“The special desk will liaise with government agencies and youth leaders to ensure that young people receive accurate information and timely support,” she added.

In addition to assisting with document facilitation, the Special Youth Desk will also monitor government commitments to the youth, including public procurement contracts reserved for young entrepreneurs and unfulfilled presidential pledges, ensuring greater transparency and accountability.

Kanyesigye emphasized that the initiative will streamline follow-ups at the district level, making it easier for youth to access and benefit from government programs.

“This initiative is about serving the youth fraternity with diligence, empathy, and commitment,” she concluded, reaffirming her dedication to addressing the needs of Uganda’s young population.
