Former Kampala Lord Mayor and president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Erias Lukwago, has been charged with misprision of treason and remanded to Luzira Prison until June 22, 2026.
Mr Lukwago appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon, where he denied the charge.
According to the charge sheet, the offence of misprision of treason relates to circumstances where an individual is alleged to have had knowledge of plans to unlawfully overthrow or change the government but failed to report the information to the relevant authorities.
The veteran opposition politician and lawyer was subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison pending further proceedings in the case.
Mr Lukwago’s arraignment follows his arrest on Monday in an operation that attracted widespread criticism from opposition leaders, members of the legal fraternity and human rights activists. The circumstances surrounding his detention sparked public debate, with critics questioning the legality of the operation and the manner in which he was apprehended.
His arrest came amid heightened political tensions and growing concerns from opposition groups over what they describe as increasing pressure on government critics.
Security agencies have yet to publicly address concerns raised over the circumstances of Mr Lukwago’s arrest.
The case is scheduled to return to court on June 22, 2026, when Mr Lukwago is expected to reappear for further mention and legal proceedings.
