Old Students Raise Shs1 Million to Support Renovation of Busabi Secondary School.

The Busabi Secondary School Old Students’ Association has launched a fundraising drive to support the renovation of damaged classroom blocks, collecting Shs1 million during a fundraising event held on Thursday.

The association, led by Godfrey Hiriye, said the money will go towards restoring learning facilities that were destroyed by a storm. Hiriye appealed to alumni, well-wishers, and other stakeholders to support efforts to rehabilitate the school.

“We have managed to raise Shs1 million today, but much more is needed. We call upon all former students and well-wishers to join us in restoring Busabi Secondary School,” Hiriye said.

He expressed concern over the poor learning conditions at the school, noting that some students are forced to attend lessons under trees, a situation he said exposes them to disruptions caused by changing weather conditions.

The school’s headteacher, Nickson Ouma, said a heavy storm in November 2025 destroyed a classroom block that housed the school’s library and science laboratory.

According to Ouma, despite making several follow-ups with the government, the school has not yet received support to rebuild the damaged facilities.

“We have an enrolment of about 600 students, but we are struggling with inadequate classroom space following the destruction caused by the storm,” Ouma said.

He added that the disaster also damaged laboratory equipment, computers, and roofing materials, estimating that the school requires at least Shs50 million to fully restore the affected buildings.

Meanwhile, the fundraising event also featured the handover ceremony for the school’s student leadership.

School administrators urged the newly elected prefects to remain disciplined, loyal to the school administration, and serve as role models for fellow students. The outgoing student leaders were encouraged to mentor and support their successors to ensure continuity in effective leadership.

The fundraising initiative is expected to continue as the school seeks additional support from alumni, development partners, and the wider community to restore its learning environment.
