One person has died following a road accident involving a vehicle in the convoy of Gen. Jeje Odongo Abubakar, the Member of Parliament for Orungo County, in Soroti City.

The deceased, reportedly a schoolgirl whose identity had not been established by press time, was allegedly knocked down by a vehicle transporting the legislator as he travelled towards Soroti City on Saturday evening.

The incident occurred at around 4:30pm at Amen A, along the Soroti–Lira Highway, near Arapai Ginnery.

Eyewitnesses said Gen. Odongo was travelling in a convoy of vehicles heading into Soroti City when the accident happened. According to their accounts, the lead vehicle had already passed when the girl suddenly attempted to cross the highway and was struck by the vehicle carrying the legislator.

The driver reportedly swerved in an attempt to avoid hitting the child, but the manoeuvre caused the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn. Unfortunately, the girl had already been hit.

The crash also left three occupants of the vehicle injured, including Gen. Odongo, his driver and a bodyguard.

Pius Elubu, the legislator’s political assistant, confirmed the incident, saying the injured occupants were taken to Doctors Plaza Hospital in Soroti City for first aid and medical attention.

However, details regarding the extent of their injuries and whether they required further admission had not yet been confirmed.

The incident drew the attention of residents and motorists in the area, with several eyewitnesses describing the events that preceded the vehicle overturning.

By the time of publication, police had not released an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding the crash. The identity of the deceased schoolgirl also remained unknown, pending official confirmation.

The tragic incident once again highlights the importance of road safety, particularly along busy highways that pass through populated communities, where pedestrians often cross roads amid moving traffic.

Police are expected to provide more details as investigations into the accident continue.
