Police in Jinja City have arrested a man for illegally converting his Toyota Mark X sedan into a pickup vehicle. The modification was discovered at Jinja Bridge, where the vehicle was impounded.

SP Michael Kananura, Traffic Police Spokesperson, confirmed the arrest but withheld the suspect’s identity. Speaking on Friday, February 6, 2026, Kananura warned that such modifications violate road safety and vehicle registration laws. “Imagine a Toyota Mark X converted into a pickup. Such vehicle modifications are unlawful,” he wrote on his official X handle.

The incident highlights concerns over illegal car modifications in Uganda. While self-modification of vehicles is permitted, it requires formal approval and registration with the Ministry of Works and Transport. Any changes to engine capacity, color, or body type must be accompanied by an inspection report costing 20,000 UGX to ensure safety and compliance.

Authorities emphasize that unsafe or unregistered modifications, such as drastic body changes, heavy bull bars, or tinting, can endanger road users and attract fines or penalties. The impounded vehicle remains under investigation.
