Burundi has formally assumed the rotating leadership of the African Union (AU) for 2026 following the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa.
President Évariste Ndayishimiye took over the chairmanship from his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, during a handover ceremony at the AU headquarters.
In his remarks, Ndayishimiye acknowledged that Burundi was assuming the role at a time when Africa is grappling with ongoing security threats, increasing unilateral actions in global affairs, mounting economic pressures, and the adverse effects of climate change.
He pledged that Burundi would lead with openness, neutrality and collaboration, stressing the importance of consensus among member states. “We will exercise this responsibility in a spirit of listening and cooperation for the benefit of all,” he said.
The Burundian leader further committed to amplifying Africa’s voice on the global stage and contributing to efforts aimed at fostering a more equitable and inclusive international system.
The AU chairmanship rotates annually, with the holder guiding the bloc’s priorities and providing political direction throughout the year.
