Lango Leaders Form Committee to Drive Unified Development Lobby
Leaders from the Lango Sub-region have established a special committee to spearhead coordinated lobbying efforts aimed at securing increased government investment and development programmes in the region.
The decision followed a high-level peace, unity and reconciliation meeting that brought together political, cultural and religious leaders at Lango Cultural Centre to deliberate on Lango’s development priorities and future engagement with government.
The meeting, organised by Tekwaro A’Lango, focused on building consensus among leaders and creating a structured mechanism to present the sub-region’s needs through a unified platform.
Chairing the meeting, the Paramount Chief of Lango, Moses Michael Odongo Okune, said fragmented advocacy had previously weakened Lango’s ability to attract national projects, stressing the need for organised and evidence-based lobbying.
He tasked leaders to prioritise shared interests such as poverty eradication, youth employment, improved healthcare, education services and protection of communal land.
Political leaders who attended the meeting backed the initiative, noting that coordinated engagement would strengthen Lango’s bargaining power with the central government led by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Lango Parliamentary Group Chairperson Judith Alyek said legislators from the sub-region are already engaging government on strategic projects including road upgrades, industrialisation initiatives and the proposed Regional Heart Institute at Lira University.
Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua encouraged leaders to maintain unity and ensure continuous follow-up on government commitments to translate pledges into tangible services for citizens.
Religious leaders led by Sanctus Lino Wanok emphasized reconciliation and trust-building among leaders, describing unity as essential for sustainable regional transformation.
The meeting concluded with the appointment of a 17-member committee chaired by Prof. Willy Okullo, mandated to draft resolutions into a comprehensive development memorandum that will guide Lango’s collective lobbying strategy over the next five years.
