Senior officials from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) have travelled to South Africa to join Ugandans in the diaspora for celebrations marking President Yoweri Museveni’s victory in the 2026 General Elections.

The NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, arrived in Johannesburg on Wednesday alongside other senior party leaders and immediately held a meeting with the Victory Party Organising Committee and members of the NRM diaspora community.

During the meeting, Todwong conveyed a message from President Museveni, expressing confidence in the election outcome and describing the win as decisive.

“There is no doubt about the President’s landslide victory. Nothing should stop members from celebrating this achievement,” he said, urging party supporters to turn up in large numbers for the celebrations scheduled for March 28–29.

He also encouraged members with concerns about the election to embrace patriotism and consider ideological training at Kyankwanzi, a key political education centre for the ruling party.

Mr Phillip Kakuru, one of the organisers, confirmed that preparations for the event have been finalised, promising a vibrant and inclusive celebration.

“All Ugandans are welcome to participate, regardless of political affiliation. We encourage everyone to join the SACCO so they can benefit from government initiatives such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model,” Kakuru said.

More senior party officials are expected to attend, including Eng. Jonard Asiimwe, Tanga Odoi, and Syrian Bagamba, who are also expected to support the organisation of party structures in the diaspora.

The main celebrations will take place in Cape Town as part of efforts to strengthen the NRM’s presence among Ugandans living abroad.

Todwong was accompanied by several officials, including Hon. Arinaitwe Rwakajara and Maj. (Rtd) Awich, Director of External Affairs. They were received by organisers led by Kakuru and Uganda’s Ambassador to South Africa, Paul Amoru.

A key highlight of the event will be the launch of a diaspora SACCO aimed at mobilising Ugandans abroad for collective investment. The initiative targets more than four million Ugandans in the diaspora, with each member expected to contribute $50 monthly.

Organisers estimate the fund could generate up to $2.5 billion annually for investment in sectors such as real estate, healthcare, and financial markets, with plans also underway to explore the establishment of a Ugandan diaspora bank.

The initiative is seen as a significant step toward harnessing diaspora resources to contribute to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation.
