The newly elected Woman Member of Parliament for Serere District, Esther Lucy Achom, has strongly endorsed the MK scholarship initiative, describing it as a powerful tool for transforming education and empowering learners across the Teso sub-region .
Achom, popularly known as Ajokotau, made the remarks during celebrations marking the 52nd birthday of Muhoozi Kainerugaba held at Bukedea Comprehensive School in Bukedea District.
She noted that the scholarship programme provides students with a stable learning environment by relieving them of financial stress, enabling them to fully concentrate on their academic work.
According to Achom, this support not only improves classroom performance but also strengthens students’ technical abilities and reasoning skills, which are essential for both academic success and future career development.
Achom further emphasised that beyond academics, the initiative exposes beneficiaries to diverse social and cultural backgrounds, allowing them to interact with peers from different communities.
She said such exposure broadens learners’ perspectives, builds confidence, and enhances their ability to adapt and compete in an increasingly dynamic world.
The legislator also highlighted the burden many parents and guardians face in meeting school requirements, noting that financial constraints often lead to interruptions in learning when students are sent home for fees.
She said the scholarship programme directly addresses this challenge, ensuring continuity in education and giving vulnerable learners a fair chance to succeed.
Meanwhile, Zipporah Akol, personal assistant to the Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, commended General Muhoozi for supporting education initiatives not only in Teso but across the country.
She noted that the Speaker has consistently championed similar efforts, including sponsoring high-performing students and supporting those in need.
Akol cited the example of the late Kalangala Woman MP Hellen Nakimuli’s daughter, Meraline Ssuubi, whose school fees at Kibuli Secondary School were fully cleared through support linked to Bukedea Comprehensive School, covering her education up to Senior Four.
She added that top-performing students in Bukedea District have also benefited from sponsorships at both secondary and tertiary levels.
She urged leaders across Teso to emulate such initiatives by investing in education and supporting vulnerable children, stressing that collective action is key to raising education standards and unlocking the region’s full potential.
