Residents of Lira City are mourning the sudden death of Joe Ebong, popularly known as Biggie, who collapsed and died while celebrating a football goal on Monday night.
Ebong, 56, who served as chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Veterans League in the city, was watching a match at Amazon Pub when Everton scored their third goal against Manchester City.
According to witnesses, he excitedly jumped up in celebration before suddenly collapsing. Friends who were with him said he appeared to suffer a heart attack.
“He jumped up to celebrate the third goal but immediately collapsed. We rushed him to Avento Clinic, but he did not make it,” said Carrick Mguta.
Medical staff at the clinic pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
News of his passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across the city, with colleagues and friends remembering him as approachable, dedicated, and deeply connected to the community.
Patrick Okwir, who also serves as spokesperson of the Lango Cultural Institution, described the loss as devastating. “It’s terrible. It’s hard to take in,” he said.
Another friend, Geoffrey Omara, suggested that an underlying health condition may have contributed to the sudden death, noting the incident was both shocking and heartbreaking.
Members of the Vintage Lounge WhatsApp group, where Ebong belonged, also sent condolences to his family, praying for strength during the difficult time.
Ebong is remembered for his long-standing service and commitment to the NRM Veterans League and his strong ties within the Lango community.
