Woman Arrested Over Alleged Theft of Three-Month-Old Baby in Namugongo.
By Skika Reporter.
Police have arrested a woman from Kalaki District for allegedly stealing a three-month-old baby boy from Kireka D Cell in Namugongo Division.
The suspect, identified as Amongin Brenda, was tracked down and arrested in Soroti following coordinated investigations by Kira Division Police.
Authorities confirmed that the baby was safely recovered during the operation.
According to preliminary police findings, Brenda had travelled from Kalaki District and visited the home of her cousin, Akunyo Sarah, on May 4, 2026.
She reportedly told family members that she had come to process her National Identification Card through the express service.
Police say that on the afternoon of May 5, at around 2:00 PM, the baby’s mother briefly stepped out of the house, leaving the infant asleep inside.
When she returned moments later, both the baby and the suspect were allegedly nowhere to be found.
The disappearance triggered immediate concern among family members and residents, prompting a police investigation and search operation that later led detectives to Soroti District, where the suspect was arrested.
Police say she had previously asked him for money, claiming she was preparing to go to the hospital for delivery.
Investigators further alleged that Brenda had deceived her husband into believing she was pregnant.
The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to face charges related to child theft. Authorities said arrangements are being made to reunite the recovered baby with the family as investigations continue.
