Honouring Dr. Miria Matembe: Uganda’s Iron Lady Who Speaks  Truth to Power.

Dr. Miria Rukoza Koburunga Matembe has long stood as one of Uganda’s most respected voices for justice, integrity, and human rights.

Throughout her distinguished public life, she earned a reputation as the “Iron Lady”—a fearless advocate who consistently spoke truth to power, defended constitutionalism, and championed the rights of women and marginalized communities.

A lawyer, former Member of Parliament, former Minister for Ethics and Integrity, member of the Pan-African Parliament, and women’s rights activist, Dr. Matembe dedicated decades of her life to public service.

She was instrumental in Uganda’s constitutional development as a member of the 1995 Constitutional Commission and later continued to shape governance and accountability through national and continental leadership.

Her lifelong commitment to gender equality inspired generations of women to pursue leadership and demand equal opportunities. As a co-founder and former chairperson of Action for Development (ACFODE), she helped build one of Uganda’s strongest women’s advocacy organizations, leaving an enduring legacy in the struggle for justice and empowerment.

Dr. Matembe’s courage has never been measured by titles but by her unwavering willingness to challenge injustice, regardless of who held power.

Her integrity, honesty, and principled leadership have made her a role model not only for women but for all Ugandans who believe in democracy, accountability, and human dignity.

Her recognition with numerous honours, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree, reflects decades of dedicated service to Uganda, Africa, and the global human rights movement.

As concerns circulate regarding her current whereabouts, many Ugandans continue to express hope for her safety and well-being.

Friends, supporters, and human rights defenders are calling for clarity while celebrating her immense contribution to the nation.

Today, we honour Dr. Miria Matembe not only for what she achieved, but for the values she embodied—courage, integrity, justice, and compassion. Her voice has inspired countless citizens to stand for what is right, even in difficult times.

Uganda is richer because of leaders like Dr. Miria Matembe. Her legacy remains a beacon of hope for future generations.
