Members of the 12th Parliament are set to receive Shs300 million each this month to facilitate the purchase of vehicles for constituency work after the government committed to releasing the funds in the first batch of the 2026/27 financial year.
Finance Minister Henry Musasizi made the announcement on Wednesday while addressing newly elected legislators during the induction seminar for members of the 12th Parliament at Speke Resort Munyonyo
Musasizi assured lawmakers that the funds had been prioritised and would be included in the first quarterly budget releases expected by July 10.
“I have already instructed my team to ensure that the money for vehicles is included in the first batch of releases this quarter. By the end of July, we shall all be happy,” Musasizi told the legislators.
He explained that the government releases funds on a quarterly basis, with the first quarter running from July to September, and said the vehicle funds would be among the first disbursements for the new financial year.
Each Member of Parliament is expected to receive approximately Shs300 million to purchase a new vehicle to facilitate travel within their constituencies.
The allocation follows Parliament’s approval of an additional Shs166.8 billion in the 2026/27 national budget to finance vehicles for members of the 12th Parliament.
Supporters of the allocation argue that legislators require reliable transport to consult constituents, monitor government programmes, and carry out parliamentary oversight effectively across often expansive constituencies.
During his address, Musasizi also highlighted Parliament’s central role in Uganda’s budget process, saying legislators have responsibilities that extend beyond approving government expenditure.
He said Parliament is mandated to approve the Budget Framework Paper, scrutinise ministerial policy statements, appropriate public funds, enact tax legislation, review budget performance reports, examine audit findings and oversee the implementation of government programmes.
The minister urged lawmakers to actively monitor public spending and ensure government resources translate into improved service delivery for citizens.
Musasizi also credited himself with leading efforts to exempt Members of Parliament’s allowances from a proposed 40 per cent income tax, saying the move was intended to safeguard legislators’ welfare as they execute their constitutional responsibilities.
The induction seminar continues at Speke Resort Munyonyo, where newly sworn-in legislators are being oriented on their roles in legislation, representation, budgeting, and oversight.
