A major step towards strengthening women’s economic empowerment was marked with the official launch of the Acom Women Empowerment SACCO in Serere District, an initiative championed by the NRM Women’s League with support from the Acom Foundation under the leadership of Serere District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Esther Acom Lucy.
The SACCO begins operations with 90 pioneer members and has set an ambitious target of expanding its membership to women in all 70 parishes across Serere District.
The cooperative aims to provide affordable savings and credit services, enabling women to establish and expand businesses, improve household incomes, and achieve long-term financial stability.

The launch was accompanied by an induction training facilitated by the District Commercial Officer, who equipped members with practical knowledge on SACCO management and operations.
The training covered savings mobilization, loan management, financial discipline, record keeping, members’ rights and responsibilities, as well as principles of transparency and accountability.
Representing Hon. Esther Acom Lucy at the event, Emanio Richard delivered her message, reaffirming her commitment to strengthening community-based financial institutions as a sustainable strategy for reducing poverty and improving livelihoods among women.
He said the Acom Women Empowerment SACCO represents a long-term investment in the economic future of women in Serere District, noting that financially empowered women contribute to stronger families, resilient communities, and broader local development.
Members who attended the launch welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the SACCO would provide them with access to affordable credit and financial literacy needed to invest in agriculture, retail trade, and other income-generating activities that have often been constrained by limited financing opportunities.
Supporters of the initiative described the launch as evidence of Hon. Acom’s continued focus on practical community empowerment programs.
They said the establishment of the SACCO demonstrates a commitment to delivering initiatives that directly benefit ordinary citizens through economic inclusion and grassroots development.
Backed by the Acom Foundation, the SACCO is expected to grow into one of Serere District’s key grassroots financial institutions, offering women greater opportunities to save, invest, and improve their livelihoods.
As expansion plans move forward across all 70 parishes, expectations remain high that thousands more women will benefit from improved financial literacy, access to affordable capital, and stronger community support networks.
With training already underway and structures being put in place for future growth, the Acom Women Empowerment SACCO stands as a significant milestone in advancing women’s financial inclusion and community development in Serere District.
For supporters of Hon. Esther Acom Lucy, the launch represents more than the establishment of a savings and credit cooperative—it reflects a broader vision of placing women at the center of Serere’s economic transformation through practical and sustainable empowerment initiatives
