Kyoga MP urges government to establish fisheries industrial park in Amolatar
The Member of Parliament for Kyoga County, Amolatar District, Hon. Angwech Colline, has urged the Government to establish a Fisheries Industrial Park in Amolatar to boost value addition, create jobs and strengthen livelihoods in the lakeside district.
Raising the matter during the 10th Sitting of Parliament on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Angwech said government should align its industrialisation agenda with the economic activities, natural resources and comparative advantage of each region.
She noted that fishing remains the backbone of Amolatar’s economy, providing employment and household income for thousands of residents.
“For most of us born and raised on the landing sites, our lives revolve around fishing. We fish to send children to school, access medical care, and it is the biggest source of income for our young people,” she told Parliament.
Angwech said establishing a fisheries industrial park would promote fish processing and value addition while creating employment opportunities, especially for the youth.
She also appealed to the Government to urgently review the recently introduced fishing regulations that limit the number of boats at each gazetted landing site to 30.
According to the legislator, the restrictions have left hundreds of licensed fishers without work despite investing heavily to comply with government requirements, with some selling land and livestock to purchase the necessary fishing equipment.
“To complement government efforts in preserving the lake, we need alternative activities that will employ our people,” she said.
Her appeal comes amid ongoing efforts by the Government to promote sustainable fishing practices while balancing environmental conservation with the livelihoods of communities that depend on Lake Kyoga.
