A delegation of prominent religious, cultural and political leaders from the Teso sub-region is expected to visit Gen Salim Saleh at his residence in Kapeeka on Friday to discuss the ongoing political and legal challenges facing former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among.
The delegation is expected to comprise Soroti Catholic Bishop Joseph Eciru Oliach, Church of Uganda Bishop Kosea Odongo, Emorimor Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng, elders from the Iteso Cultural Union (ICU), and several Members of Parliament from the Teso region.
Sources familiar with the planned meeting say the leaders intend to seek Gen Saleh’s support in promoting dialogue, reconciliation and what they describe as forgiveness for Among following the political controversies that have surrounded her in recent months.
Five legislators—four from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and one from the opposition—were reportedly invited to participate. However, by the time of publication, only one NRM legislator had confirmed attendance, while the others had not publicly committed to the visit.
The discussions are expected to take place at Gen Saleh’s Kapeeka home, which has in recent years become a key venue for consultations and mediation involving senior political figures.
The planned visit comes shortly after the Emorimor met with Among and announced his intention to engage President Yoweri Museveni on her situation, emphasizing the need for fairness, due process and humane treatment.
The participation of both Catholic and Anglican bishops highlights the growing involvement of religious leaders in efforts to support a peaceful resolution to the challenges facing one of Teso’s most prominent political leaders.
It is not yet known what proposals the delegation will present to Gen Saleh, nor whether the meeting has the endorsement of the Presidency. It also remains unclear whether the initiative was requested by Among herself or independently organized by leaders from the Teso region.
Attempts to obtain official comment from members of the delegation were still underway at the time of publication.
If the meeting takes place as planned, it will represent one of the most notable reconciliation initiatives undertaken in support of the former Speaker since her political and legal difficulties emerged.
