Ngora Residents Ordered to Vacate Wetlands by End of 2026

Ngora District — Residents of Agirigiroi Village in Kapir Sub-county, Ngora District, have been ordered to stop cultivating crops in wetlands following recurring conflicts between crop farmers and cattle keepers.

The directive was issued by the Ngora Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Josephine Omara, during a mediation meeting convened to address repeated disputes over the use of the wetland.

Omara gave farmers until 30 December 2026 to harvest their crops and vacate the protected wetland. She urged both farmers and cattle keepers to respect the resolutions reached during the meeting in order to prevent further conflicts and promote peaceful coexistence.

Some of the farmers accused of cultivating in the wetland admitted to violating environmental regulations, apologized to the community, and pledged to comply with the RDC’s directive by vacating the area before the deadline.

Community members welcomed the intervention, expressing hope that strict enforcement of wetland protection measures will restore harmony between farmers and livestock keepers while safeguarding the environment.

Local leaders have emphasized that protecting wetlands is essential for conserving natural ecosystems, maintaining water resources, and supporting sustainable livelihoods in the district.
