Residents of Mukuju A Zone in Mukuju Parish, Tororo District, have petitioned the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and Tororo Municipal Council over alleged improper disposal of garbage and medical waste near their homes.

In petitions dated September 3 and 12, 2026, the residents claim that municipal trucks have dumped waste at the site for more than 10 years, despite its proximity to homes, gardens, a trading centre and the Iyama well, their main water source.

The residents, represented by local council leaders, allege that the dumpsite was established without community consultation, fencing, or an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment.

They say the waste has caused foul smells, air pollution, and the breeding of flies, rats, and other pests, which they associate with illnesses including diarrhoea, typhoid and respiratory infections.

The residents further claim that contaminated runoff has affected their water sources, while plastics, broken glass, and chemical waste have damaged crops and reduced the value of property in the area.

They also accuse municipal officials of failing to attend a community meeting held at the dumpsite on September 10, despite being invited to address the concerns.

The residents are now asking NEMA to urgently inspect the site urgently, order its closure and relocation, and compel Tororo Municipal Council to clean up the area and restore the land.

They are also demanding an alternative clean water source and compensation for affected residents.

The petition has been copied to several government authorities, including the Minister of Local Government, the NEMA Executive Director, the Tororo Resident District Commissioner, and district leadership.

The residents have requested a response within seven days.
