The Bukedi Zone Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) has launched the Schools Weekend League and Bukedi Zonal Teachers League, in a move aimed at strengthening grassroots sports development, promoting school football and improving cooperation among sports stakeholders across the zone.

The launch took place on Sunday at Busia Integrated Primary School in Busia District, under the leadership of Zonal Chairman Mr Dominic Maloba Enyanda and his executive committee.

The Schools Weekend League opened with two fixtures. Busia SS Girls defeated Riverside High School Girls 3–1, while the boys’ encounter between Busia SS and Riverside High School ended in a 1–1 draw.

Under the new arrangement, each of the seven districts in Bukedi Zone will organise its own weekend league, with supervision from the zonal executive. Schools will compete within their respective districts, with neighbouring schools encouraged to arrange fixtures within accessible distances to minimise transport and other operational costs.

The competition will follow a home-and-away format and be governed by USSSA rules, with discipline among players and match officials emphasised as a key requirement.

At the end of the district competitions, the zone plans to organise a Bukedi Elite League, tentatively scheduled for early March 2027, ahead of the Post-Primary Schools Championships. The one-day competition is expected to feature the seven district champions and the best runner-up across the zone, making a total of eight teams.

According to the organisers, the weekend league is intended to keep student-athletes active, support early preparations for major competitions, ease pressure associated with district championships and provide a platform for identifying emerging talent. It will also contribute to the Ministry of Education and Sports’ objective of promoting games and sports in schools.

Meanwhile, the Bukedi Zonal Teachers League will bring together teams of teachers from the seven districts, with each district expected to register a team in line with the Ministry of Education and Sports requirements.

The teachers’ competition will also adopt a home-and-away format, before the top two teams meet in a final next year to determine the overall champions. The winners are expected to receive cash prizes, a trophy and medals.

Beyond competition, the teachers’ league is intended to strengthen relationships and promote harmony among football administrators and teachers across Bukedi.

Both leagues are expected to be played every weekend, creating regular competitive opportunities for students and teachers while strengthening the football structure across the zone.
