Wife dies following alleged Beating, Husband arrested

Police in Mayuge District have arrested a 55-year-old man suspected of beating his 45-year-old wife to death following a domestic dispute over alleged infidelity.

The suspect, identified as Peter Ofwono, a resident of Mashaga Village in Kityerera Sub-county, was arrested in Idudi, Bugweri District, as he allegedly attempted to flee towards Tororo.

Mayuge District Police Commander Aggrey Okumu identified the deceased as Rebecca Athieno, saying preliminary information indicates that she was assaulted by her husband after he accused her of having affairs with other men.

A relative, Matrida Apero, said the couple returned home from Bugadde Trading Centre at about 10pm on Sunday, November 1, before a disagreement escalated into a physical confrontation.

She said Athieno was severely beaten and later found dead in bed on Monday morning.

Mashaga Village Chairperson Samuel Mususwa said the suspect had previously been accused of assaulting his wife, raising concerns over domestic violence in the area.

Police have arrested the suspect as investigations into the circumstances surrounding Athieno’s death continue.
