Stalemate as FDC Blocks Eigu’s Withdrawal from Soroti County Race

A stalemate has emerged in Soroti County after the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) rejected an attempt by its flag bearer, Mr Daniel Eigu, to withdraw from the parliamentary race, insisting he remains the party’s duly nominated candidate.

In a letter dated December 26, 2025, addressed to the Uganda Electoral Commission, the FDC Secretary General, Mr Nathan Nandala Mafabi, stated that Mr Eigu cannot unilaterally withdraw his candidature. The party cited Section 36(3) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, which restricts a nominated candidate from pulling out at will once officially endorsed by a political party.

The party’s position follows correspondence from the Electoral Commission dated December 23, 2025, and an earlier letter from Mr Eigu himself indicating his intention to step down from the Soroti County parliamentary contest.

According to the FDC, Mr Eigu remains its legitimate flag bearer for Soroti County Constituency in Soroti District, and the party has no plans to replace him. Mr Mafabi emphasized that the opposition party will continue campaigning for Mr Eigu alongside other FDC candidates until the official close of campaigns.

The development has created uncertainty on the ground, with supporters awaiting clarity on whether Mr Eigu will actively participate in the race despite the party’s directive.

Copies of the FDC letter were shared with the party president, Mr Eigu, and the Soroti Electoral District returning officer. The standoff adds a new twist to the Soroti County parliamentary contest as the 2026 general elections draw closer.
