Kira MP Ssemujju Concedes Defeat, Vows to Stay Politically Active

Kira Municipality Member of Parliament Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has conceded defeat in the January 15, 2026, parliamentary elections, ending his 15-year tenure in Parliament.

The veteran opposition politician acknowledged that National Unity Platform’s George Musisi legitimately won the seat, describing the outcome as a clear verdict from voters.

Ssemujju, however, stressed that his loss does not signal the end of his political engagement. He said he would continue contributing to the struggle for democratic reform, albeit from outside Parliament.

“In Kira, the opposition celebrated the defeat of an opposition candidate rather than the ruling party,” Ssemujju remarked, suggesting internal weaknesses within opposition ranks.

While accepting the results in his constituency, he raised concerns about what he described as widespread irregularities affecting opposition candidates elsewhere in the country.

Preliminary results from the 2026 elections indicate a sharp reduction in opposition representation in Parliament, from 106 MPs to about 78. Ssemujju warned that the absence of experienced legislators would weaken debate and oversight in the 12th Parliament.

Reflecting on his long service, he said voters may have felt it was time for new leadership. Musisi’s victory marks a major political shift in Kira, with analysts attributing his success to grassroots mobilisation and sustained community engagement.
