Medard Lubega Ssegona Announces Exit from Active Politics.

Renowned lawyer and long-serving politician Medard Lubega Ssegona has conceded defeat in the recently concluded parliamentary elections, losing the Busiro East seat to independent candidate Emmanuel Magoola, who is aligned with the National Unity Platform (NUP).
In a video message shared on social media, Ssegona announced that he is stepping away from active politics and public life to focus on his family.
“I am joining private life, where I will focus on leading my family,” Ssegona said.
He noted that although he is leaving Parliament, he intends to maintain the relationships he built during his 15 years of legislative service.
“We shall continue to do a lot together, God willing. I will keep serving my country, just in a different way,” he added.
Ssegona also congratulated Magoola on his victory, wishing him success as the new representative of Busiro East. He expressed gratitude to the electorate for entrusting him with three consecutive terms in Parliament.
The election followed a public fallout between Ssegona and the NUP after he failed to secure the party’s nomination for a fourth term.
NUP had initially endorsed musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga, who was later disqualified by the Electoral Commission for failing to meet the minimum academic requirements.
Walukagga subsequently backed Magoola, who went on to win the seat with 35,361 votes. Ssegona finished third with 4,503 votes.
Ssegona’s strained relationship with NUP leadership had been building for years.
Tensions intensified after he declined to oppose the controversial Shs1.7 billion “service award” awarded to then-Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga and three parliamentary commissioners, a decision that divided the party.
He later openly criticised NUP’s move to drop Mpuuga from the Parliamentary Commission, citing corruption and lack of transparency, further deepening the rift.
Having served in Parliament since 2011, Ssegona now exits the political stage, closing a chapter defined by legal expertise, vocal advocacy, and what supporters describe as principled political
