The Board of Governors of Bukedi College Kachonga on Thursday presided over a major leadership transition, marking the official handover from the outgoing management to a newly appointed team. The event drew attendance from teachers, parents, students, and alumni.

The outgoing board, chaired by Sam Hibbinga Wyre, formally handed over leadership to the new board under the stewardship of Samuel Kakula Hirome.

Presiding as Guest of Honour, Ronald Mutego, the newly elected Member of Parliament for Bunyole East, called upon the school’s old boys and teaching staff to prioritize academic excellence.

He emphasized that improved performance would attract higher student enrolment. Mutego also pledged to collaborate with the board to lobby for additional infrastructure and resources to uplift the school.

The headteacher, Yokosofat Outa, highlighted key challenges facing the institution, including low student enrolment, mounting debts, pressure from creditors, and reluctance among some parents to meet fee obligations.

Reflecting on his eight-year tenure, Wyre noted that student numbers had grown significantly—from just 90 learners to about 500.

He attributed this progress to strengthened discipline, proudly stating that the school had not experienced any student strikes during his leadership. He also pledged continued support to the incoming board when called upon.

In his remarks, Hirome outlined priorities for the new administration, including addressing persistent water scarcity, which he identified as a major cause of past unrest in the school.

He further stressed the importance of teamwork in governance and committed to pursuing efforts to reclaim school land reportedly encroached upon by the neighboring Mudanye family.

At the same time, Hirome cautioned the school administration against mismanagement of funds, underscoring the critical oversight role of the Board of Governors in ensuring accountability and smooth operations.

The ceremony also featured service awards recognizing the contributions of outgoing board members.

According to Wyre, the new board was appointed by the Butaleja District Local Government in conjunction with the school’s foundation body and includes a strong representation of old boys from across the Bukedi region.
