Residents of Soroti District have been urged to remain calm and vigilant following renewed assurances from Resident District Commissioner Hajji Imran Muluga that the area is stable despite isolated security incidents.

Addressing the public, Muluga noted that the district has remained largely peaceful, with only one major incident reported in recent weeks.

About a month ago, armed robbers shot and injured a businesswoman in Soroti City, sparking concern among residents. Investigations later revealed that some of the suspects were operating from within the district.

Security agencies responded swiftly, leading to the arrest of all individuals involved, including the suspected gunman. According to the RDC, the gravity of the crime—combined with the involvement of former military personnel—has led to the case being referred to the court martial.

“We want to assure the public that the situation is under control. Both the district and the city are calm,” Muluga said.

He added that security has since been reinforced, with police increasing patrols and intensifying intelligence-led operations to prevent further incidents.

Authorities are also paying close attention to the holiday period, as schools close and children return home.

Muluga warned parents to be vigilant, noting growing concerns over youth involvement in crime. He pointed to emerging groups in areas such as Arapai and Asuret sub-counties, where some young people are reportedly being recruited into gangs and engaging in drug abuse, including marijuana, opium, and fuel inhalation.

“These activities are dangerous and will not be tolerated. The law will take its course against anyone involved,” he emphasized.

In Ngweri Sub-county, security agencies are also investigating cases of vandalism, where solar-powered streetlights installed in trading centres have been destroyed.

The lights were meant to improve safety and support small businesses, particularly for beneficiaries of government livelihood programs.

Several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the vandalism, while authorities continue to crack down on petty crimes such as theft of livestock and poultry.

Muluga called for collective responsibility in maintaining peace, urging community leaders, religious institutions, and families to take an active role in guiding young people and promoting discipline.

“Security is everyone’s responsibility. We must all work together to protect our communities and avoid actions that lead to crime and imprisonment,” he said.

The district security committee has also announced plans to conduct tours across sub-counties to engage residents directly, raise awareness, and strengthen cooperation between the public and security agencies.

With ongoing efforts to expand police infrastructure and improve surveillance, Muluga expressed confidence that Soroti will remain safe and secure.

“Together, we can sustain peace and ensure a better future for our district,” he concluded.
