All legislators belonging to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have been summoned to attend a special caucus meeting scheduled for Tuesday morning, ahead of the anticipated tabling of the Sovereignty Bill in Parliament.

According to a notice issued on May 4 by Government Chief Whip Denis Hamson Obua, the meeting will take place at 9:30am in the Conference Hall at the Office of the President. Attendance is mandatory for all NRM Members of Parliament.

The notice indicates that the meeting will address the “business of the day,” although sources within the party say it is intended to harmonize the party’s position on the Sovereignty Bill before it is presented during the afternoon plenary sitting.

Parliament is expected to convene at 2pm, and legislators have been urged to be physically present.

The Sovereignty Bill has attracted significant public attention, with supporters arguing it will strengthen Uganda’s national interests, while critics have raised concerns about its potential implications for the country’s international relations.

Copies of the notice were sent to President Yoweri Museveni, Vice President Jessica Alupo, Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja, and NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong.

The NRM holds a majority in Parliament, a factor that could influence the outcome of the bill when it is tabled.
