Outgoing Tororo Municipal Mayor Kenneth Orono Nyapidi has officially handed over office to the Town Clerk, leaving behind a municipality that was declared corruption-free by the Inspector General of Government (IGG).

In a handover letter dated May 14, 2026, Nyapidi said the exercise followed a directive from the Minister of Local Government after the expiry of his five-year term from 2021 to 2026. His bid for re-election was unsuccessful.

“I had asked the Deputy Town Clerk to implore the heads of department to make reports and hand over to me so that I prepare a detailed and comprehensive report,” Nyapidi wrote.

“Time was not on our side due to the busy schedules they were having.”
Among the items handed over were the official mayoral vehicle, a Toyota Hilux registration number UG 3400122, office stamp and keys, the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, and the ceremonial mayoral gown.

Nyapidi thanked the municipal technical team for the support rendered during his leadership, saying he exits office as a “happy leader” after the IGG declared Tororo Municipality a corrupt-free entity.

During his tenure, the municipality registered several infrastructure and service delivery achievements. These included the opening of new roads, upgrading of culvert lines, and near completion of the Nyangole–Kasoli Bridge.

Chamwinuula Health Centre II was upgraded to Health Centre III and is now fully operational, while the municipality also emerged among the cleanest urban authorities in the country under the polluter-pays policy.

The municipal headquarters were renovated with installation of a lift and ramp to improve accessibility for the elderly and persons with disabilities. Solar street lights were also installed in peri-urban trading centres.

Nyapidi further noted that local revenue collection rose significantly from about UGX 400 million annually to approximately UGX 1.5 billion per year during his administration.

The council also resumed recruitment processes after the lifting of a government ban and maintained the Uhuru–Senior Quarter Road with support from Tororo Cement Industries.

He highlighted unfinished priorities for the incoming leadership, including completion of Nyangole Health Centre III and Kasoli Health Centre II, as well as processing land titles for public properties such as Lions Children’s Park.

Nyapidi thanked the people of Tororo for entrusting him with leadership over the past five years and urged residents to continue embracing him even out of office.
