Teachers and school administrators across Butaleja District have welcomed the donation of scholastic materials by Building Tomorrow, a non-governmental organisation, describing the initiative as a major boost to early childhood learning and school enrolment.

During an assessment conducted by journalists across the district, headteachers confirmed receiving learning materials, including books and teaching charts, aimed at supporting Primary One teachers and improving the learning experience of young pupils.

Teachers reported that the donation has not only eased classroom instruction but has also contributed to increased enrolment in government-aided primary schools, with more parents choosing public schools over private institutions.

School leaders further noted a significant improvement in learner attendance and enrolment across the district, partly attributed to recent harvests that have improved household incomes.

The development comes just days after concerns were raised over delays by some learners in reporting for the second school term.

The schools sampled during the assessment included Busolwe Township Primary School, Buhabeba Primary School, Busabi Primary School, Bugegege Primary School, Habiga Primary School, Hope for You Primary School, AFAAFU Islamic Centre Primary School, Owino Public Primary School, Buwesa Seed Secondary School, Busaba Seed Secondary School, and Budumba Secondary School.

Last week, Building Tomorrow conducted a district-wide training programme for Primary One teachers aimed at strengthening their capacity to deliver quality education to young learners.

According to Ivan Kasamba, Deputy Manager of Building Tomorrow, the organisation trained 193 Primary One teachers across Butaleja District, targeting approximately 25,000 learners in government-aided primary schools.

“We encouraged teachers to make lessons lively and engaging so that children can easily understand and retain concepts,” Kasamba said.

Witney Winnie, the Education Officer at Building Tomorrow, said the training was designed to build teachers’ confidence and improve learning outcomes among Primary One pupils.

“We are promoting a unified approach to teaching young learners. In the future, the programme will be expanded to include Primary Two and Primary Three teachers,” she explained.

The Butaleja District Inspector of Schools, Bernard Opendi, commended Building Tomorrow for its commitment to improving education standards in the district.

“This initiative is a great boost to Primary One learners. I urge the trained teachers to put the acquired skills into practice to improve learning outcomes and contribute to the development of Butaleja District,” Opendi said.

The donation and teacher training programme are expected to enhance the quality of foundational education and strengthen literacy and numeracy skills among young learners across the district
