The Electoral Commission (EC) has completed preparations for the nomination of candidates seeking to contest for the Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament seat in the forthcoming by-election scheduled for June 24, 2026.
According to the election roadmap, the Commission has successfully concluded the display of voters’ registers, a process that lasted 10 days and forms part of preparations for the by-election.
The parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of the incumbent and winner of the 2026 general elections, Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away during surgery.
Speaking to journalists at the EC offices in Kizzi Village, Kalangala Town Council, Returning Officer Ronald Agaba said candidate nominations will be conducted over two days, beginning Wednesday, June 10, and ending Thursday, June 11, from 9:00am to 5:00pm each day.
Agaba emphasized that strict guidelines will be enforced during the nomination exercise to ensure order and compliance with Electoral Commission regulations.
“No candidate will be allowed to access nomination grounds, which are at the Kalangala District Headquarters main hall, with a procession of either vehicles or supporters,” Agaba said.
He added that each candidate will be permitted a maximum of two vehicles carrying no more than 10 people.
“The most crucial people are the proposer and the seconder. Other requirements include being a Ugandan registered in the voters’ register and registered within the district or constituency where one casts their vote,” he explained.
Agaba further noted that aspiring candidates must have paid the mandatory nomination fee of sh3 million, possess at least an Advanced Level (S6) qualification, and be of sound mind.
Political attention is currently focused on a likely contest between the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), with both parties expressing confidence in securing victory.
The race has so far attracted four aspirants awaiting formal clearance through the nomination process. The Electoral Commission is expected to announce the final list of candidates who meet the requirements to contest for the Kalangala Woman MP seat after nominations are concluded.
The by-election is scheduled to take place on June 24, 2026.
