Four Amuria Officials Remanded Over Alleged Shs6.5 Million Cattle Compensation Fraud.
By Skika Reporter.
Four local leaders and officials from Asamuk Sub-county in Amuria District have been arrested and remanded to Amuria Government Prison over allegations of defrauding beneficiaries of the government’s cattle compensation and restocking programme in the Teso sub-region.
The suspects, who appeared before the Amuria Grade One Magistrate’s Court on Friday, include Obur Parish Chief Okello Simon, Alomain Village LC1 Chairperson Opio James, and Obur Village LC1 Chairperson Esingu Daniel.
A fourth suspect was also remanded in connection with the alleged fraud.
The officials are accused of fraudulently obtaining approximately Shs6.5 million from beneficiaries of the cattle compensation programme.
In a separate but related case, Odeke Samuel, the Chairperson of the Obur Parish PDM SACCO, was also remanded over allegations of stealing Shs1 million belonging to Asio Jane under the Parish Development Model (PDM) programme.
The arrests follow ongoing investigations into alleged fraud and abuse in the implementation of the government’s livestock compensation and restocking exercise across the Teso sub-region.
Authorities say the investigations are aimed at protecting public funds and ensuring that compensation reaches the intended beneficiaries, many of whom lost livestock during years of insecurity in the region.
District officials have warned public servants and community leaders against exploiting government programmes for personal gain, emphasizing that anyone found culpable will face prosecution.
The prosecution told the court that the suspects will remain on remand as investigations continue.
By press time, authorities had not disclosed the specific charges against the accused or the date of their next court appearance
