Police Impound Two School Buses Carrying More Than 200 Pupils En Route to School Trip.

Police have impounded two school buses transporting more than 200 pupils from St. Kizito Primary School after they were allegedly found dangerously overloaded while heading for a school tour.

According to a police statement issued on Friday morning, the two drivers were arrested during a traffic operation and are currently detained at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala.

They are expected to be arraigned in court on charges related to overloading and endangering the lives of passengers.

The suspects have been identified as Kimbugwe Ali, who was driving bus registration UA 092AS carrying 110 pupils, and Mutesasira Abubakari, who was driving bus UAN 619X carrying 97 pupils.

The arrests come amid heightened enforcement following the recent fatal school bus crash in Kapchorwa District, where a bus carrying pupils from King David Primary School, Ndejje, was involved in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 21 pupils and the school’s director, Mr. Tadeo Ssekadde.

Police said the bus was reportedly carrying 113 pupils and 13 teachers when the driver lost control, veered off the road, and struck a large roadside rock.

In response to the growing number of road crashes involving school children, Uganda Police said it is working with relevant stakeholders to develop new guidelines aimed at improving the safety of school transportation.

The force noted that details of the proposed measures will be communicated once consultations are complete.

The latest operation follows a directive by the Minister of Education, Dr. John Chrysostom Muyingo, suspending all school-organized tours until further notice as authorities review safety measures.

Police reiterated their commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and warned school administrators and transport operators against overloading buses or violating road safety standards, emphasizing that the lives of school children must remain a top priority
