Grief in Nagongera as Unopposed LC1 Chairperson Dies a Day to Polls.
By Gabriel Oligo and Lazima Wangadya.
residents of Nagongera Town Council woke up to shock and grief on Monday after the unopposed NRM LC1 Chairperson flag bearer died a day to the polls.
The deceased has been identified as Oketch Otangi, 49, a resident of Akidi Cell, Southern Ward, Nagongera Town Council, Tororo District.
According to Mzee Obbo Oketch Jascience, the District Male Councillor representing Nagongera Town Council, Otangi was only waiting to be declared winner since he had gone through unopposed.
He notes that the man was supposed to be declared tomorrow since he had no competitor, noting that it’s really very sad for the entire community
Obbo noted that some members close to the family said Otangi had been battling stomach complications in recent weeks.
However, other family members allege foul play, saying one of the neighbours had reportedly told Otangi that “he will never lead the village” after the NRM primary elections.
The councillor cautioned residents against loose talk and threats.
He further called for calm among locals and dismissed the early allegations of foul play, urging the family and residents to wait for official findings.
The death has left Akidi Cell without a chairperson on the eve of the LC1 elections set for 28th/July/2026.
The Electoral Commission is expected to give guidance on the next steps for the vacant position.
