Tororo Security Put on Notice as Violence Against Shyam Tanna Supporters Escalates

Security agencies in Tororo Municipality have come under growing scrutiny following allegations of escalating violence, intimidation, and criminal acts targeting supporters of parliamentary aspirant Shyam Tanna, amid claims of inaction by police and other security forces.
Across the municipality, residents have been seen gathering in small groups, speaking in hushed tones as fear and tension spread.
Many point to a series of threats allegedly issued by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Apollo Yeri Ofwono, which have circulated widely on social media and through video recordings.
In several of the videos making rounds, the incumbent MP Apollo Yeri ofwono is seen addressing leaders of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the municipality, reportedly assuring them that the “Muyindi” — a reference used by his supporters to describe Shyam Tanna — would not be allowed to address any public rally in Tororo.
The remarks have raised concern among residents and civil society actors, who say such statements may be fueling hostility on the ground.
Supporters of Shyam Tanna report a pattern of attacks, threats, and intimidation allegedly carried out by individuals linked to the incumbent’s camp.
According to multiple accounts, police and other security agencies have either downplayed these incidents or failed to take decisive action.
There are also reports of organized groups of youths moving around the town, vandalizing and defacing campaign banners and posters belonging to Tanna.

Witnesses allege that some of these groups have assaulted individuals found wearing Tanna-branded T-shirts or engaging in campaign activities on his behalf.
The growing insecurity has heightened anxiety among residents, with many expressing concern that the situation could deteriorate further if authorities do not intervene.
Shyam Tanna has since called on police and other security organs to fulfill their constitutional mandate by restoring law and order, protecting lives and property, and ensuring a level playing field for all political actors.
As the political temperature rises in Tororo, pressure is mounting on security agencies to act decisively and impartially to prevent further violence and safeguard the democratic process.
