Sarah Bireete Detained at Nateete Police

The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest and detention of Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), who is currently being held at Nateete Police Station in Kampala.
In a statement issued on Tuesday via X, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Ms Rachael Kawala said Bireete was in police custody and would be produced in court in due course. Police, however, did not disclose the charges under which she was arrested.
Bireete was taken into custody on the afternoon of December 30, 2025, following a security operation at her residence. Earlier in the day, she raised alarm on her verified X account (@SarahBireete), writing: “My house is under siege by Police and Army.”
Sources close to Bireete later confirmed that armed security personnel surrounded her home before escorting her away. Since her arrest, efforts to contact her have been unsuccessful, with her known phone lines switched off or unreachable.
The arrest has sparked concern among civil society actors and human rights advocates, who are demanding clarity on the reasons for her detention and calling for her constitutional rights to be respected.
By press time, police had not provided further details regarding the circumstances surrounding her arrest or the timeline for her court appearance.
