BUTALEJA — The Parish Priest of Nalugunjo Parish Church of Uganda in West Bunyole Archdeaconry, Rev. Patrick Bokere Tibemanya has urged residents of Butaleja District to refrain from engaging in protests ahead of the forthcoming general elections, citing concerns for their safety.
Rev. Bokere made the appeal on Friday while delivering a homily during a vigil service for the late Mzee Lekoboam Kiwujjo at Bunghoma A.
He cautioned voters against what he described as misleading mobilisation by some political actors, particularly claims encouraging supporters to “vote, wait for the count, and demand positive results.”
According to the cleric, there are trained vote protection teams and security personnel who are prepared to deal firmly with any acts of defiance.
He warned that confrontations with security agencies could lead to serious consequences for civilians.
Rev. Bokere further criticised what he termed self-seeking tendencies among some politicians, advising the public to accord such actors limited attention.
He emphasised the importance of peaceful coexistence and unity as Uganda approaches the elections.
His remarks come amid reports of growing tensions and sporadic clashes involving supporters of Hon. Geoffrey Eric Mutiwa and James Waluswaka, who are both vying for the Bunyole West Member of Parliament seat.
Local leaders and residents have continued to call for calm as campaigns draw to a close.
