NRM CEC endorses Among, Tayebwa for Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC), chaired by party president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, has endorsed Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa to retain their positions in the 12th Parliament.

Highly placed party sources said the decision was reached unanimously during a CEC meeting held at State House on Tuesday, January 27. The resolution will now be formally communicated to the NRM parliamentary caucus for adoption.

Sources revealed that Among and Tayebwa were credited with strong mobilisation within Parliament and across the country, a factor seen as critical in helping the ruling party consolidate support ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Among reportedly impressed CEC members for her active role in campaigning for President Museveni and NRM flag bearers during the previous electoral cycle.

The duo also earned praise for facilitating unity within the party, including persuading several independent-leaning NRM candidates to step down in favour of official party flag bearers.

Their endorsement follows a long-standing party tradition under which the Speaker and Deputy Speaker serve two consecutive five-year terms.

Among first entered Parliament leadership as Deputy Speaker in 2021 before succeeding the late Jacob Oulanyah as Speaker, while Tayebwa replaced her as Deputy Speaker.

During their tenure, Parliament has passed a record number of Bills, many of which have since been assented to into law.
