Police in Busia have intensified a manhunt for a suspected killer who escaped on a waiting motorcycle after fatally stabbing a 28-year-old bar attendant during a blackout on Tuesday night.

The victim, Sharon Kirabira, was attacked at about 8pm while on duty at a bar in Busiwondo A Village, Dabani Sub-county. According to Busia District Police Commander Peter Mugabi, officers were immediately dispatched after the murder was reported.

“We received information last night about the murder and sent both uniformed and plain-clothed officers to the scene,” Mugabi said.

Preliminary investigations suggest the attacker had monitored Kirabira and struck after confirming she was alone. Residents said the assault occurred shortly after a power outage plunged the area into darkness.

Richard Wafula, one of the first responders, said the mother of four was found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. Police said she sustained injuries to the hand, forehead and ribs, indicating she may have tried to defend herself.

Village chairperson Julius Mangeni said the deceased’s employer heard her cry out and saw a man in a black jacket and hood fleeing before jumping onto a motorcycle that sped off.

Kirabira had reportedly worked at the bar for about a week after leaving her marital home in Buteba Sub-county due to alleged domestic violence. Her mother, Agnes Awinjo, said her daughter had previously faced threats from her husband.

A bicycle mechanic, John Egesa, said he had seen a suspicious man in a black jacket near the premises shortly before the killing.

The body was taken to Masafu Hospital for postmortem as investigations continue.
