The Butaleja District Local Government, through its Production Department, has intensified preparations for a two-day Agricultural Exhibition scheduled for March 5th and 6th, sparking excitement among farmers across the district and neighbouring areas.

The annual exhibition, which was introduced last year, provides a platform for farmers to showcase their agricultural produce and explore modern technologies aimed at improving agricultural productivity.

This year’s theme is “Showcasing Innovation and Agricultural Sustainability in Butaleja District.” The event will be held at the Butaleja Booma Grounds at the district headquarters.

Speaking during a talk show on Rock City 98.4 FM in Tororo, the District Agricultural Engineer, Eng. Charles Swama, said the exhibition will feature displays of various agricultural products and practical training sessions for farmers.

He noted that farmers will receive hands-on training in modern farming practices such as beekeeping, maggot rearing, fish farming, piggery, zero grazing of cattle, and modern methods of restoring soil fertility.

Eng. Swama added that technical officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries will attend the event to provide technical guidance and help link farmers to reliable markets for their produce.

He expressed optimism that the exhibition will significantly improve agricultural practices in Butaleja District and enhance household incomes. He encouraged residents to turn up in large numbers, noting that entry to the event is free of charge.

Some residents have welcomed the initiative. Sam Abiriga, a resident of Gampe in Busolwe Town Council, said agriculture remains a viable solution for individuals who did not excel academically and pledged to participate in the programme.

Benya Hadali from Busaba Town Council noted that it has been costly for local farmers to travel to Jinja to attend similar exhibitions, describing the local event as timely and convenient.

Meanwhile, Moses Weere, a resident of Bufuja–Kachongha Town Council, suggested the establishment of a permanent demonstration farm in addition to the annual exhibition to ensure continuous learning for farmers.

Eng. Swama also urged residents to embrace the government’s Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project, which aims to boost agricultural production and improve livelihoods.

Under the programme, groups such as SACCOs are encouraged to venture into cattle keeping for milk production and fish farming. Farmers will also be required to bulk and collect milk collectively to strengthen their bargaining power and secure better markets.
