ALBOH Safe Rooms Restore Hope for Schoolgirls in Butaleja
By Ambrose Wanagoli
BUTALEJA – A Little Bit of Hope Uganda ALBOH , a non-governmental organization operating in Butaleja District, has reached a significant milestone in its mission to support adolescents in schools, targeting at least 10 schools across the district.
Speaking to journalists at her office on Monday, the organization’s manager, Grace Lyaga, revealed that safe rooms have so far been constructed in four out of the 10 partner schools.
The beneficiary schools under the menstrual hygiene campaign include Buhasango Primary School, Mugulu Primary School, Busaba Project School, and Nalugunjo Primary School.
According to Ms. Lyaga, the safe rooms are equipped with basins, water, soap, and reusable sanitary pads to support girls during menstruation.
The facilities provide a private space where girls can change clothes with dignity and comfort while at school.
She noted that the initiative aims to restore hope among vulnerable girls who are at risk of dropping out due to challenges related to menstrual hygiene.
In addition to improving menstrual health management, the organization is planning to strengthen school feeding programs.
Ms. Lyaga disclosed that the NGO will soon procure seeds for the 10 partner schools to support school-based agriculture projects.
The schools will receive maize, soya beans, eggplants, and tomatoes to boost food production and enhance learners’ nutrition.
Responding to the manager’s remarks, Abel Wasanya, the Headteacher of Buhasango Primary School, welcomed the initiative, saying the establishment of safe rooms will address the problem of low self-esteem among vulnerable girls.
Mr. Wasanya further reported that the school has gradually re-enrolled teenage mothers, a development he partly attributes to the ongoing menstrual hygiene improvement campaign in schools.
The initiative marks a step forward in promoting girls’ education and well-being in Butaleja District.
