New Push for Badminton as Butaleja Teachers Receive Training

Teachers in Butaleja District have successfully undergone training in the sport of badminton, a move aimed at promoting and developing the game in the area.

Simon Mugabi, the National Chief Executive Officer, said the new Sports Act requires registration of the sport across at least 50% of districts in the country. He noted that so far, only 13 schools in Butaleja District have registered for badminton.

Mugabi explained that badminton helps in talent development and can serve as a source of income for participants. However, he pointed out that the sport involves a limited number of players and is mainly played indoors.

Hellen Cheruto, the Games and Sports teacher at Mulagi Girls Secondary School and the District Secretary for Secondary School Sports, described badminton as interesting, easy to organize, and inclusive, as it accommodates participants of all abilities, including those with disabilities.

Roggers Kamara, Games and Sports teacher at Nakwasi Seed School, welcomed the training, calling it timely. He emphasized that many players in other parts of Uganda have improved their livelihoods through badminton.
