Butaleja Education Officers Pledge Support for Co-curricular Activities.

Education officials in Butaleja District have reaffirmed their commitment to promoting co-curricular activities, urging schools to prioritize talent development alongside academics.
Speaking at the district athletics event held on Thursday at Booma Grounds, the Acting District Sports Officer, Jennet Akol, encouraged teachers to create opportunities for learners to nurture their talents, in line with recommendations from the Ministry of Education.
Ms. Akol applauded the pupils for showcasing their abilities, but criticized individuals who undermine athletics, stressing the importance of respecting and supporting sports. She further assured participants that her department is ready to support outstanding athletes up to the highest level.
She also directed sports instructors to ensure fairness in selecting teams that will represent Butaleja District at the upcoming Bukedi regional competitions scheduled to take place in Tororo in May.
The District Schools Inspector, Bernard Opendi, emphasized that co-curricular activities provide alternative pathways to success. He noted that while some learners may struggle academically, sports and other activities can offer them opportunities to excel and build meaningful careers.
Meanwhile, Aggrey Hyuha, the District Secretary for Games and Sports, revealed that the district won three medals in athletics last year. However, he expressed concern over the low participation of learners with disabilities in this year’s competitions.
Amos Hiire, the Publicity Secretary for Games and Sports, highlighted that the athletes are well-prepared to compete at the national level, attributing their readiness to consistent training.
The event was not without controversy, as earlier reports indicated a disagreement between sports officials and some security personnel, along with the LC1 of Bambone Cell in Butaleja Town Council.
The officials allegedly demanded recognition and financial facilitation before allowing the event to proceed. Despite the tensions, the competition went on without their involvement, with education authorities condemning the demands as inappropriate.
The district officials concluded by reiterating their dedication to strengthening co-curricular programs as a vital component of holistic education.
