Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli was laid to rest in Luweero District on Thursday in a solemn ceremony marked by military honours, emotional tributes, and renewed calls for investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Nakimuli was buried in Kayunga village, Kalagala Sub-county, where she was accorded a three-gun salute in recognition of her service as a Member of Parliament. The burial attracted more than 60 MPs, largely from the National Unity Platform (NUP), alongside political, religious, and cultural leaders.

The NUP delegation was led by acting party president Lina Zedriga, while party president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu joined mourners virtually through a recorded message.

Calls for investigation into death

In his message, Kyagulanyi said the initial postmortem report had not provided a conclusive cause of death and called for further investigations.

“The first postmortem didn’t give us a conclusive answer, but we were asked to be patient for two weeks. We are waiting to find out what exactly caused her death,” he said.

He described Nakimuli as a committed leader who remained firm in her political convictions despite challenges.

Tributes from leaders

Zedriga urged party members, especially women, to draw inspiration from Nakimuli’s dedication, patriotism, and integrity, describing her as a symbol of principled leadership within the party.

“Nakimuli’s example of loving her country, her party, and remaining true to leadership is a script we should all follow,” she said.

The burial also became a moment of broader political reflection, with leaders urging residents of Luweero to remain committed to national transformation, drawing parallels with the region’s historical role in Uganda’s liberation struggles.

Luweero District Chairperson Erasto Kibirango reminded mourners of the sacrifices made in the area during the 1980s and cautioned against forgetting those contributions.

“The sacrifices made here must not be in vain. We must continue building on that legacy,” he said.

Concerns over healthcare system

Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo used the occasion to raise concerns about Uganda’s healthcare system, suggesting that gaps in medical services may have contributed to Nakimuli’s death. He also highlighted her unique position as one of only two Orthodox MPs in Parliament.

Cultural and family tributes

Representing the Buganda Kingdom, Information Minister Israel Kazibwe Kitooke praised Nakimuli for her service and engagement with kingdom affairs.

The deceased MP’s father, Rev. Fr. Christopher Walusimbi, thanked mourners for their support and urged families to instill strong moral values and faith in children.

The Orthodox Church led the final prayers before Nakimuli was interred at her ancestral home, as colleagues and constituents paid their last respects to a leader described as resilient, principled, and deeply connected to her community.
