Parliament Urged to Stay Alert as Government Unveils Heavy Legislative Agenda
By Peterson Hiirya.
The Speaker of Parliament Jacob Marksons Oboth has urged Members of Parliament to remain vigilant and proactive in their legislative and oversight responsibilities, echoing President Yoweri Museveni’s recent “no more sleep” message.
Addressing legislators, the Speaker called for what he described as a “Parliament of no more sleep,” stressing the need for increased accountability, responsiveness, and commitment to public service delivery. He said MPs must take a more active role in ensuring government programmes are effectively implemented and that citizens’ concerns are addressed in a timely manner.
The remarks follow growing emphasis from the executive on efficiency and discipline in public office, with leaders calling for stronger performance across government institutions.
In a separate announcement, Speaker Oboth confirmed that President Museveni will deliver the 2026/27 national budget speech on Thursday, June 11, 2026, at the Kololo Independence Grounds. The presentation, scheduled for 2:00 pm, is expected to outline government spending priorities for the upcoming financial year.
The budget speech comes at a time when government is preparing an extensive legislative programme. President Museveni has indicated that at least 38 bills will be tabled before Parliament, forming part of an ambitious reform agenda aimed at advancing national development priorities and strengthening policy frameworks across key sectors.
The proposed bills are expected to cover a wide range of areas, including economic management, governance reforms, and service delivery improvements, as the government seeks to accelerate implementation of its development strategy.
Officials have also reiterated warnings to public servants about underperformance, with the President previously cautioning that “non-performers” should vacate leadership positions if they fail to deliver results.
Parliament is expected to engage with the legislative programme in the coming months as it reviews the proposed bills and prepares for the new budget cycle.
