Former Minister of State for Fisheries Hellen Adoa has urged leaders and supporters in Teso to unite behind Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, saying the country must begin preparing for a new generation of leadership.

Adoa was speaking at Soroti Hotel, where more than 300 leaders and supporters from across Teso gathered and declared their support for Gen. Muhoozi, the leader of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), for the 2031 presidential election.

Adoa said her support for Muhoozi was informed by what she described as a gradual transition to a younger generation of leaders capable of taking responsibility for the country’s future.

“Most of us here are like people teaching a child how to drive. You teach your child how to drive and, at a certain point, you move to the co-driver’s seat and start telling him, ‘Go slowly. Do this. Do that.’ That is the stage where we are now,” Adoa said.

She said Gen. Muhoozi’s record of service and sacrifice had strengthened her confidence in his leadership potential, adding that Uganda needed leaders who understood the country and its people.

As former Minister Musa Ecweru addressed the gathering, Adoa said she was reminded of the sacrifices attributed to Muhoozi in maintaining peace and security in Uganda.

“I have no doubt, and I want to stand here and say that I can have MK rather than any other person who does not know us,” she said.

Adoa said one of her major concerns had been the country’s leadership after President Yoweri Museveni, but she now believed that a younger generation was increasingly positioning itself to take responsibility.

“I have been worrying about life after Museveni. That has been my worry. But God has been doing His own things, and the young man is already there,” she said.

She called on supporters to remain united and strengthen their mobilisation efforts ahead of future political contests.

Adoa also praised the campaign against corruption, saying it was an important issue that should remain central to the political agenda.

“We will support you and continue fighting until the same day,” she said, while congratulating Muhoozi and his family.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang said Teso was no longer prepared to remain a spectator in national politics.

“This time around, Teso is ready to be part of the decision-making process. We no longer want to be spectators,” Ogwang said.

Ogwang said PLU was a civic organisation operating within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and could attract supporters from different political backgrounds.

He said several political actors in Teso had expressed interest in working with the movement and predicted that more people would join as the 2031 political transition approaches.

Ogwang also defended support for Muhoozi against accusations that it amounted to promoting family rule, challenging critics to meet them in the political arena.

“We shall meet you in the elections,” he said.

He further warned PLU supporters and local officials against using the movement’s materials to extort money from members of the public, saying those found engaging in such practices would face arrest.

Ogwang said the movement was also working on establishing structures and would seek guidance from the relevant authorities.

The Soroti meeting ended with a renewed call for mobilisation, unity and grassroots organisation in Teso in support of Muhoozi’s 2031 presidential bid.
