Tororo Municipality Member of Parliament Shyam Jay Tanna has called for stronger collaboration between political leaders and cultural institutions, saying traditional institutions play a critical role in promoting unity, preserving cultural values and accelerating community development.
Shyam Jay Tanna made the remarks in an interview during the fourth coronation anniversary celebrations of His Royal Highness Emorimor Papa Paul Sande Emolot Etomeileng III, held in Malaba, Busia County, Kenya.
He said cultural and religious institutions complement government efforts by shaping citizens’ moral values and preserving cultural identity, which he noted are increasingly threatened by external influences and social media.
Shyam Jay Tanna observed that the celebrations had brought together cultural leaders, government officials, business people and communities from Uganda, Kenya, South Sudan and Ethiopia.
He said the gathering also presents economic opportunities for the border communities, particularly through attracting investors, creating employment and supporting local businesses.
According to Shyam , local vendors, suppliers and other service providers had already benefited from the event through increased business activity.
He added that the celebrations could attract long-term investments, including factories and other enterprises that would create jobs for young people in the region.
Describing Emorimor as a leader with a golden heart, Shaym said he had consistently demonstrated commitment to improving education, infrastructure and unity among the communities under his leadership.
He pledged to support the cultural leader through the Teso Parliamentary Group, saying legislators could lobby for policies and government interventions that address the needs of the Teso community.
On internal conflicts within cultural structures, Tanna called for dialogue, unity and collective leadership, saying bringing different groups under one leadership provides an opportunity to address disagreements and resolve underlying challenges.
He expressed confidence that continued engagement between the Emorimor, cultural ministers and other stakeholders would help restore harmony within the institution.
