UEDCL Struggles to Restore Power Supply in Tororo as Spiro Bike Riders Struggle to Charge.
By Gabriel Oligo.
Boda boda riders in Tororo Municipality using Spiro electric motorcycles are stranded without reliable charging facilities as the ongoing power outages continue to disrupt business in the area.
The riders say the electricity shortage has left them struggling to charge their motorcycle batteries for two consecutive days, resulting in congestion and reduced business as they cry for alternative charging points.
Otiti Rajaba, a boda boda rider operating at Safeway Boda Boda Stage, Gate Number 4, at Tororo Central Market, has appealed to Spiro Bikes management to intervene by providing alternative charging support for at least two days to help riders whose businesses have been affected by the power disruptions or give them a two day no payment space.
Meanwhile, UEDCL Tororo Branch Manager, Muramuzi Dickens, says efforts to restore electricity supply are ongoing, adding that some areas that had remained in darkness have started receiving power.
Dickens said most of the technical team is working tirelessly to ensure that electricity is restored in the remaining affected areas within the next two days.
He explained that the restoration exercise is continuing, noting that the damage caused by the heavy storm that hit Tororo two days ago was extensive.
According to Dickens, the restoration work is being carried out progressively, depending on the resources and capacity available each day. He, however, noted that most of the heavily affected sections have already been restored, with only isolated cases remaining to be addressed one by one.
The storm reportedly affected more than 300 people and destroyed property worth millions of shillings, while several electricity poles were damaged, disrupting power supply across parts of Tororo Municipality for more than three days.
The prolonged outages have not only affected households and businesses but have also created additional challenges for boda boda riders who depend on electricity to keep their Spiro motorcycles operational.
