Fresh details have emerged about the violent confrontation between fishermen and police at Olagar landing site in Serere District, highlighting growing tensions between law enforcement and lakeshore communities.

Sergeant Robert Ocana, the officer in charge of Olagar Police Post, died on Wednesday from injuries sustained during Monday night’s clash, becoming the second officer to lose his life in the incident. He passed away at Serere Health Centre IV, where several injured officers remain under medical care.

The violence erupted as police attempted to arrest murder suspect Bashir Etidau. According to South Kyoga regional police spokesperson SP Stephen Mukombe, Etidau raised an alarm that mobilised a mob, which attacked the officers, killed Special Police Constable Ivan Oibi on the spot, and freed the suspect.

Two police motorcycles were torched during the chaos. Police say Etidau now faces three murder counts once arrested. Ten suspects, including local leaders, are in custody as investigations continue.
